Presentation of ŠS SFD & DŠFS
Students' Section of Slovenian Pharmaceutical Society (ŠS SFD), established in 1978, is a non-political and non-profitable organization which represents students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Our main goal is to motivate students to take active role in their educational process. We do this by encouraging them to participate in or organize various projects on a local and international level. In 1998 the Slovenian Pharmaceutical Students’ Society (DŠFS) has been established to co-operate with ŠS SFD in the organization of all projects and it is independent in all aspects. ŠS SFD and DŠFS act as one common students' association.
ŠS SFD counts as one of the most active students’ societies of the University of Ljubljana. Although the membership is voluntary, the incredible working atmosphere among almost 100 active members of 400 ordinary members makes working on projects fun, enjoyable and enthusiastic. This is why we don’t mind spending the whole day in our students’ room, discussing the improvement of traditional projects and brainstorming about new ones. New generations feel the energy that binds us together through projects and are joining us. So, we believe in the future ŠS SFD will be even more active, successful and recognizable at the international and local level. We have been active in and outside Slovenia since our beginning and through all these years we have been ordinary members of EPSA and IPSF. During all these years there has not been an international event without a bigger or smaller Slovenian delegation.
Our projects in the school year 2008/09
14th International Pharmaceutical Summer Camp took place from 17th to 24th July in Dolenja vas pri Čatežu. 50 students from Slovenia and other countries gathered there to learn everything about allergies. In the first half of the week lectures and workshops were held followed by a public campaign in nearby towns. The social program included archery, picnic, sport tournaments, paintball, massage workshop, a visit of a wine cellar. Every night we had great theme parties: unisex, salsa and hair style party and international evening.
Two qualifications and a final of Patient Counselling Event (PCE) have taken place during the year.
Each event consisted of lectures about a certain disease and a practical part in a real pharmacy. There students competed with each other in counselling to a patient. This year's topics were Mild cognitive obstruction, Acid conditioned diseases and Osteoarthrosis. Seven students were chosen to proceed to the final competition held in April. The first prize was 55th IPSF Annual Congress in Bali, Indonesia!
Healthcare team project Students of different health professions (medicine, pharmacy, nursing) joined in April to gain additional knowledge on healthcare. This year's topic of lectures and workshops with patients was Breast Cancer.
Consultation and Clinical Skills Workshop In co-operation with our faculty, hospital Golnik KOPA and the Pharmaceutical-Biochemistry Faculty in Zagreb, Croatia we organized a Consultation and Clinical Skills Workshop. Students attended interactive lectures and two workshops: Practicing consultation skill and practicing drug history taking. Lecturers and students from Zagreb joined us.
The Teddy Bear Hospital was active all the year round trying to help children to lose their fear of medical examinations and taking medicines. Students visited 25 kindergartens in Slovenia. Pharmacists in TBH pharmacies were teaching children about importance of taking medicines when they are ill and showing the proper way of taking them.
Twelve pharmacy students assisted in measuring blood glucose levels and answered people’s questions in pharmacies to inform people about general facts about diabetes, its consequences and the importance of healthy lifestyle. We also organised a "walk for diabetes" to the Ljubljana castle.
Pharmacy students should pay attention to tuberculosis because still about 200 people are infected with TB in Slovenia every year. ŠS SFD organised a lecture on which the disease and its epidemiology in Europe and Slovenia were presented. We also learned about the role of a pharmacist in treatment of TB infected people.
“Leciklarna” – expired drugs collecting campaign
Pharmacies in Slovenia have not been allowed to collect expired drugs for a few years. By organising “Leciklarna” we try to prevent these drugs would end up in household waste. In April, stands for the campaign were set in bigger towns of the South region of Slovenia. After collecting the drugs, quantity and types of expired drugs were listed and removed appropriately. We collected 6,100 pieces of medicines, all together 600 kg.
Students’ Exchange Programme SEO prepared a panel about IPSF Student Exchange Programme. Last summer ten students went abroad, to Indonesia, Peru, Great Britain, Latvia and Spain and ten foreign students from Serbia, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia and Germany came to SEP in Slovenia. They were working in pharmacies and at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Ljubljana.
The greatest event was definitely The Christmas Bazaar at the Faculty of Pharmacy. Students and professors bought sweets or Christmas cards and so 400 EUR were raised. Once a month students helped at the clinic for people without health insurance in Ljubljana.
Other activities and events Spatula is our students' magazine that presents local projects, international events and scientific news through articles. We published three issues this year.
Twinnet project Around 20 students visited Beograd in our Serbia-Slovenia TWIN and almost at the same time 16 students were enjoying QUATRINO in Barcelona in November.
This year we had two scientific evenings, the first one on the topic of schizophrenia, the second one about TB and the lecture room was always completely full.
The month of a pharmacist is a one-month project at the beginning of the academic year which contains numerous activities like:
Motivation weekend is held in October. Through ice-breaking games, workshops and presentations, we introduce our activities and events to new enthusiasts that wish to join us. The role, work and international projects of IPSF and EPSA are also presented to them.
Mobility day (pharmacists around the world) is organized to motivate students to exchange, to be mobile and try to do a research work or one-year of study abroad. We also encourage students to attend EPSA and IPSF events and so contribute to these two international organisations. Social activities
Different sports activities like bowling, paintball, skiing, ice-skating, mountain hiking and other social events, such as excursions, picnics, pharma cinema and of course many parties were organized during the year.
